City Wins Award for Food Pantry

NORTH MIAMI, FL (January 18, 2024) – The City of North Miami is delighted to announce
its selection as one of the Small City category winners for the esteemed Nutrition Access
Affordability and Education Grant program. This remarkable achievement is part of the laudable
initiative spearheaded by the African American Mayors Association (AAMA) and the American
Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America (ABFHA).

The Nutrition Access Affordability and Education Grant program, a collaborative effort between
AAMA and ABFHA, aims to recognize and support cities that demonstrate outstanding
commitment and innovation in promoting nutrition access, affordability, and education within their
communities.

North Miami’s noteworthy achievement is rooted in the leadership of Mayor Alix Desulme, Ed.
D., who founded “The NoMi Food Pantry” on June 11, 2019. A groundbreaking resolution,
sponsored by then-Councilman Alix Desulme and unanimously passed by the North Miami City
Council, established the pantry under the management of the city’s Housing and Social Services
Department. The pantry’s mission is to end hunger and poverty in North Miami by transforming
lives through the promotion of healthy eating and nutritious education.  The pantry is located at our Sunkist Community Center, located at 12500 NW 13 Avenue.

“We are honored and humbled to be acknowledged as a Small City category winner in the Nutrition
Access Affordability and Education Grant program,” expressed Mayor Desulme, “This recognition
reaffirms our city’s commitment to fostering a healthy and thriving community. We extend our
gratitude to the African American Mayors Association and the American Beverage Foundation for
a Healthy America for their support and acknowledgment.”

As a Small City category winner, the City of North Miami will receive $75, 000, which will be
instrumental in advancing existing programs and launching new initiatives to improve nutrition
access, affordability, and education.

The City of North Miami administration looks forward to utilizing this grant to reinforce its
commitment to the health and wellness of its residents. The award not only brings prestige to North
Miami but also highlights the city’s commitment to addressing critical issues related to nutrition and public health. As the recipient of this national recognition, the City of North Miami will
continue to lead by example, utilizing the grant received to further enhance and expand initiatives
promoting healthy living.
