The 1st Anniversary of January 6th Insurrection

On January 6th, the future of American democracy weighed heavily on me. As usual, I spent hours (literally) talking with residents about local issues. As usual, some agreed with me and some didn’t. But it was vitally important that we could have that discourse. We could agree to disagree. And if my actions are deemed incorrect by voters, they can vote me out at the next election. That’s a beauty of democracy. But danger is posed to all our communities…and America…by many who refuse to accept democratic outcomes. On January 6th we are reminded that threats to democracy are at our doorstep. January 6th is a reminder we must each be active in the American system. In doing so, sometimes your point of view wins, and sometimes it loses. But as a wise man once said, “you can’t love your country only when you win.”
